Perfect conditons for new sailors

PERFECT weather was provided for the new adult students attending this year's RYA level 2 sail training at Bexhill Sailing Club.

The new students were taken on their introductory sail and then all had a go at helming for the first time. Monday's students also took advantage of the fine weather and mastered their capsize drill.

Forty-four local residents signed up to learn to sail at the club which is an RYA licensed Training Centre. The club has been offering training for 20 years and approaching 400 adults have passed through the training sessions with the majority staying as active members.

This year's students attending the Saturday and Monday 10-week courses are typical in that they cover the full age spectrum from 18 upwards including pensioners who have decided that it is something they always wanted to do and now they have the time.

The increasing interest from the ladies of the locality means there are more women than men on this year's courses. Training centre principal Ray Dixon said: "Women make just as good sailors as men and it is encouraging to see so many taking up the sport. The family nature of the club encourages the whole family to get involved in a sport where everyone can participate."

The students are roughing it at the moment in the temporary buildings which can be seen on the beach, eagerly awaiting the completion of the current building works which is due to finish in approximately two weeks' time. This will provide new showers, toilets and changing facilities including disabled facilities. The demand for training seems insatiable and Ray is already taking bookings for next year's courses as well as a planned 10-week Tuesday evening course starting mid-July.
