Record field for Poppy Half

Following a sell-out race in 2010, organisers TL Sports Events significantly increased the field size and the entry limit has once again been reached in advance of race day.

A competitive race is expected at the front with Chichester AC’s James Baker, pictured, running his first Poppy Half on the back of his recent victory in the Sussex Half Marathon Championship at Barns Green.

He will be joined by last year’s second and third place finishers, Joshua Varney, of Hastings AC, and Robert Jeffery. In the women’s race, last year’s third place finisher, Ali Farrall, of Wadhurst Runners, is returning.

The first three male and female finishers will receive a trophy and cash prize, while all age group winners and the first male and female club teams will also receive trophies.

Supported by Club BRT - Bexhill Runners & Triathletes, the race supports the important work of the Royal British Legion and has raised more than £8,000 for the charity in the past three years.

The race starts at 12.30pm near to the Sovereign Light Café on West Parade, and takes in parts of West Parade, the Lower Promenade, Brockley Road, Richmond Road and The Polegrove.

The fast, flat course appeals to runners of all abilities and the four-lap format ensures that they receive fantastic support from spectators throughout the race.

There are also children’s races (entry £3 on the day) which take place at 12noon. Road closures will be in place on parts of West Parade (between South Cliff and the Sackville roundabout), Brockley Road and Richmond Road from 11.05am-3.30pm.
