Rampant H&B power to emphatic away win

H&B scored 11 tries in an excellent performance from the whole team as they overwhelmed King’s College Hospital 67-14 in their latest Kent One fixture.

The forwards dominated the opposition pack and the backs executed their moves with precision against a well-organised and competitive King’s College team.

The H&B front row welcomed back Tony Roche from injury and John Hanagarth started in place of the unavailable Chris Stern at number eight.

Winger Tim Sills opened the scoring in the 11th minute. A good scrummage put the home defence under pressure and a well-constructed backs’ move put Sills away.

The home side then took the lead with a converted try after a five-metre lineout, but scrum-half Elliot Parry put H&B back in front with a try converted by Bruce Steadman.

Sills was infringed in a chase for the ball when he seemed certain to score and the referee awarded a penalty try, which was duly converted.

Birthday boy Harry Walker made a great break and passed to Calvin Crosby-Clarke, who showed great handling skills to put Chas Ackerley away for the final score of the half and hand H&B a 24-7 advantage.

King’s College opened the second half scoring with a converted try after eight minutes of pressure on the visitors’ defence.

Ben Campbell replied with a good try as the H&B backs put together an excellent passing move across the pitch.

A powerful forwards’ attack by Robin Brereton and Hanagarth made the ball available for scrum-half Parry to put his half-back partner Steadman in for a good try.

H&B were playing the style of rugby they have aspired to all season as all the training and coaching sessions came to fruition. There were no handling errors and therefore very few opportunities for the home team to build attacks.

From the 50th minute, the game was all-H&B as they dominated in every department, and further tries came from Ackerley, Jimmy Adams and Sills.

Walker had to leave the pitch with an injury, but Jacob McDonough came on to score two late tries, both of which were converted by Steadman.
