Sam Ellis came off the substitutes’ bench to strike twice in the second half as Westfield held Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two leaders Upper Beeding on Saturday.

Fielding quite a different line-up from anything seen before Christmas, Westfield got off to a flying start with a goal inside three minutes. Liam Ward got his head to a miskick from the Beeding goalkeeper and played the ball through for Asher Grindle to lob home from 20 yards.

Beeding levelled, however, five minutes later. Westfield committed too many men forward and the visitors broke, resulting in a cross being hooked into his own top corner by Ashley Kidman.

Westfield bossed the opening 20 minutes, but Beeding took control in the run-up to half time. Beeding took the lead after Westfield failed to clear a corner and made it 3-1 from a one-on-one situation just before the break.

Westfield were well on top after the break, though, and pulled one back in the 75th minute. Ellis beat his man on the edge of the box before firing into the net.

The equaliser 12 minutes later came with a large slice of good fortune. A Beeding defender tried to clear a Westfield corner, but the ball hit Ellis and rebounded into the net.

Westfield thought they had won it right at the end. Ward’s shot from 30 yards was spilled by the goalkeeper and Toby Shaw tucked away the rebound after rounding the goalkeeper only to be denied by an offside flag.

Westfield: Cullip; Kidman, Warren, Durrant, Gravett; Ward, Hurst, Bossom (Fox); Grindle, Dadswell (Shaw), Coombes (Ellis).
