Worthing Rugby Club all set for annual 7s tournament

WORTHING Rugby Club host their annual popular 7s competition at Roundstone Lane on Saturday.

The first games kick off at 10.30am and there will be teams from the Marauders, Apache and British Army, as well as four Worthing sides in total.

The tournament is now in its ninth year and Worthing are set to join the super 7s circuit from next year, which is the circuit all the top 7s teams compete in throughout the year.

Worthing have off-the-field entertainment on the day as well, with a pitchside hot tub (available in half-hour sessions), a tackle challenge with input sensors to find out who has the strongest tackle and biggest hit (with prizes available), kids zone, hog roast, barbecue, coffee venders, ice cream man and the bar will be open all day.

Worthing Raiders chairman David Hinchliffe said: “It’s a really nice event and signals the end of one season and the beginning of the new season.

“There’s some strong teams in the Elite League competition this year, where a Worthing Raiders team is making their debut, and there will be lots of quality rugby on show.

“It’s a fantastic advert for rugby as it’s non-stop action and there’s various things going on all the time.”

The format is 12 teams in each competition (men’s Elite and Open leagues; and women’s Elite and Open leagues), and then four pools of three teams. The top two go into their respective quarter-finals, with the bottom team in each group going into the semi-finals of a Plate competition, so every team is guaranteed a minimum of three games.

Entrance for the tournament is £5, or £3 for members.
