RUGBY: Worthing target wins in league and cup

AFTER a week without action, Worthing Raiders get back into the swing of things with two matches this weekend.

On Saturday, they will hope to distance themselves from the bottom of National 3 South when they travel to sixth-placed Dings Crusaders, and on Sunday, they take on Hove in the Sussex Trophy semi-finals.

Raiders and Ealing were the only teams in the league not to have a game on Saturday and results favoured Raiders. Chinnor, Lydney and Havant all lost, so Worthing remain fourth from bottom and have now played the same number of games as Lydney, but have a game in hand over Havant and Chinnor.

Worthing director of rugby Ian Davies said: "It could have been disastrous this weekend with us not having a game. But, with none of the other teams down the bottom picking up points, Bridgwater's loss means they are very much in the mix now, so the ball is very much in our court.

"We have lost the last three on the trot so we really need to get back on the winning trail this weekend.

"However, Dings is never an easy place to go. They're an intimidating side, but the lads are up for it and we will look to secure a win."

Raiders drew 13-13 against Dings at Roundstone Lane back in November in a match they should have won, after they threw away a 13-0 half-time lead when they conceded a converted try deep in injury-time.

Davies said: "We played well in the first half at home but in a moment of daftness, we let them snatch a draw at the death.

"Havant also face Chinnor at the weekend, so if we beat Dings and Havant win, it will put some distance between ourselves and the bottom."

Tom Sargeant and Joe Marler are both set to be away on England Under-20 duty, but Micky Pointing may return from a knee injury.

On the match against Hove the following day, Davies said: "A few of the lads will be playing both games, and I think the game will be a lot tougher than some people think.

"Hove play a good brand of rugby and if we go in with a blas attitude, we will come unstuck, but I will be very disappointed to lose.

"But Saturday and the league is obviously our priority."
