Saints suffer another defeat

ST LEONARDS slipped to a 3-2 defeat away to Ringmer on Wednesday.

A second successive reverse - to follow the 2-1 loss at Hassocks four days earlier - has seen Saints begin to drop back into the chasing pack in Sussex Division One.

Yet, if they continue to perform with such endeavour and quality, the current mini-slide should be quickly arrested enabling them to focus on the summit again.

Manager Gary Bowyer said: "We're playing all the football but we're not really getting the goals and getting behind defences. I've got to shore up the defence and get the forwards putting the ball in the net."

Dave Fisher hooked a 10th minute opener for the visitors but Dominic Shepherd converted a penalty he earned in first half stoppage time after a defensive mix-up. The same player put his side ahead five minutes into the second period but Andy Cyrus levelled two minutes later. Just as Saints looked in complete control, Greg Nessling fumbled Paul Stokes' drive and Shepherd poked in the rebound.

Dave Flemming missed a sitter and Fisher struck the post late on.

Saints are back at The Firs on Saturday September 27 for the visit of Southwick in the second round of the Sussex RUR Cup.
