Sarah soars at Portsmouth

Competing for the Eastbourne/Hastings team in the first round of the National Junior League at Portsmouth, Sarah Moore, from Hailsham, brushed aside her disappointing jumping in the Southern Women's league the previous day by clearing 1.55m to place second in the high jump event.

Moore was even more pleased when she set a personal best of 9.37m in the shot putt '“ and she also took third place in the long jump with a fine leap of 5.18m.

Also in action at Portsmouth Newhaven's Andrew Adair set a personal best in his first outing of the season over 400 metres clocking an impressive 50.1s, while Lewes's Matt Basford was an equally impressive winner of the 2000m steeplechase, his first attempt at the Under 20 steeplechase distance.

Many local athletes prepared for this weekend's Sussex Track and Field championships at Crawley with an outing at the Haywards Heath Open meeting at the Crawley track.

In the Under 17 800 metres, no less than six Lewes runners lined up for the start but it was Ben Hoy Slot, in his first year in this age group, who led the sextet home, taking third place in 2min 10.7sec, with club mates Ashley Williams and Alfie Sterling close on his heels in 2min 11.1sec and 2min 11.2sec respectively.

Matt Suter clocked 2min 15.2sec in eight place, one place ahead of Josh Burgess who recorded 2min 18.4sec with Matt Rethy recording 2min 26.7sec in 13th position.

In the senior 800 metres, fellow Lewes runner Nick Hearn clocked 2min5.5sec.

In a combined Under 17/Under 200 women's 800 metres, Jessica Lewis, who completed a hat trick of wins for the Lewes team in the Southern Women's League match at Crawley, raced into fourth place in 2min 30.4sec.

In the senior men's One-mile race Matt Basford, who is in his first year of the Under 20 group, had a fine run to place fourth (first Under 20) in 4min 49.9sec.

Racing in the women's event club mate Roxie Blackwell, another first year Under 20, went one better filling third place in 5min 58.1sec.

Tim Pitson, from St Bede's, notched up a double in the Under 15 throwing events. Pitson threw 33.32m to win the javelin throw and 31.52m to win the discus, while school mate Aras Fildis took third place in this event with 27.65m.

Fellow St Bede's athlete Martin Denyer, who had been squeezed into second place in the Under 17 100 metres in 12.3sec, leapt a splendid 5.70m to win the long jump.

This weekend's Sussex championships are as much a test of the stamina for the officials as they are for the athletes.

Events start at 11am both Saturday and Sunday and will continue for more than six hours each day.
