Saxons picked up their 10th win in 11 Sussex Open Hockey League Division One matches to preserve their six-point lead at the top of the table going into the festive break.

It wasn’t long until Saxons won their first short corner of the game, which Alex Coombs finished in somewhat fortunate style with a twice deflected drag flick.

The away side was soon two-up with the in-form Chris Meredith finishing off another clinical Saxons move. The third away goal came from Coombs’ tireless work, driving down the right and feeding skipper Jamie Busbridge for a first time finish at the near post.

The table-toppers finished the first half with Busbridge scoring his second of the match following a neat one-two between Olli Beal and Coombs.

After the restart, Beal broke free and ‘dinked’ the ball over the goalkeeper - good friend and ex-Saxons player Ben Bosden. Beal was at it again shortly afterwards to make it 6-0.

Coombs made it 7-0 from a short corner, dribbling through two defenders and passing the ball round the goalkeeper. A very youthful Grinstead squad nabbed a deserved consolation goal after Saxons goalkeeper Mike Sutton and man of the match Cornish tackled each other.
