Saxons targeting maximum points

Table-topping South Saxons are targeting maximum points in the run-up to Christmas.

Saxons have four South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One matches remaining before the festive break and three of them are away to bottom half opposition.

Their captain Paddy Cornish said: “We’re looking to hopefully go into the Christmas break still sitting there (at the top). I’m hoping that we can gain a bit of leeway on points and go into that break with a bit of a gap there.”

Having won six and drawn one of their first seven contests, Saxons continue to lead Horsham II by a point. They also possess the best goal difference in the division and have scored more than any other team.

“We’ve got three away games and one home game (before Christmas), and we’re looking to get 12 points,” continued Cornish. “We’ve been in this sort of situation for the last couple of seasons and we’ve not got there so I’m hoping this will be the year.”

Saxons’ next two fixtures are away to seventh-placed Crawley II tomorrow (Saturday) and bottom-of-the-table East Grinstead IV next weekend, and Cornish says they must guard against complacency. Pete Watters, pictured, will return tomorrow.
