Search is on for Chichester's 2012 sporting stars

The 2012 Olympic Games are just a few months away '“ and we are on the hunt for our own sporting stars in the Chichester district.

Nominations are open for the 2012 Chichester District Youth Sport Achievement Awards and we are looking for local sports stars, teams, coaches and volunteers worthy of winning.

Former Youth Sport Achievement Awards winners have gone on to to great things, including fencer Tom Hendrie from Midhurst, who hopes to be involved in the GB team in London in the summer.

Nominating someone for an award is easy – just fill out one of the nomination forms with details and send it back to the council. The deadline for entries is Friday, April 13.

The scheme recognises not only the outstanding achievements of young sportsmen, women and teams across the sporting spectrum, but also those coaches and volunteers that work tirelessly behind the scenes.

The awards, organised by Chichester District Council in partnership with the Observer and Chichester Priory Rotary Club, are presented in the following categories:

Team of the Year

Volunteer of the Year

Coach of the Year

Young Person’s Commitment to Sport

Outstanding Contribution to Sport

Outstanding Sports Performance of the Year, and

Youth Sport Achievement.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for leisure and well-being at the council, says: “As we approach the Olympics we want to celebrate the wealth of young sports talent here in the Chichester district.

“These young people may, in the not-too-distant future, be competing themselves for their country at the highest level in future Olympic Games through their hard work and dedication and that of their coaches and supporters. The council are determined to develop sporting opportunities for all young people. It is always good to see such a range of sports represented at these awards.”
