Shooting star bags 15th Euro title

Shooting great George Digweed celebrated his 15th European Championship victory last weekend.

The Northiam marksman won the European Compak title in a dramatic sudden death shoot-off against András Szerdahelyi in Budapest.

Digweed shot a perfect score of 50/50 in the opening round last Thursday, and followed this up with another clean sweep on Friday and again on Saturday.

Although two clays were missed on Sunday, Digweed closed the tournament with a score of 198/200, putting him in pole position for the win.

Hometown hero Szerdahelyi was in similarly scintillating form, however, and went into the final day with a score of 148/150. He had to post a perfect score on Sunday to tie with Digweed - and that’s exactly what he did.

That meant the tournament went down to a sudden death shoot-off, and Digweed kept his nerve to win the competition and add yet another trophy to his bulging cabinet.

The result continued an excellent 2012 so far for Digweed, who won the FITASC and Compak Championships in South Africa during March before clinching the Eley Cartridge Prize at the Classic Handicap Final and earning a glorious gold medal at the Czech Grand Prix last month.
