Sidley cup reign ended by Horsham YMCA

SIDLEY United's defence of the John O'Hara League Cup ended on Tuesday with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Horsham YMCA.

The West Sussex side dominated much of the semi-final at Burgess Hill and were unlucky not to have won by more as Sidley's poor form shows no sign of stopping.

The first goal arrived 24 minutes in when a free kick was floated into the six-yard box and headed into his own net by Jason Finch.

Peter Baker equalised with a well taken strike and could have scored again when he was sent clear a few minutes later, only to be denied by a dubious offside decision.

But it Horsham who took a 2-1 lead into half time when two Sidley defenders and keeper Danny Poole stood back and let Matt Duffield score an easy goal.

United looked more positive in the second half with Adam Day hitting a 20-yarder just over and Paul Balch mis-hitting a shot with the goalmouth gapping.

The missed chances were punished when Paul Boxall out-jumped the Sidley defence to head home David Armstrong's corner.

The disheartened Blues had little more to offer up front and only bad luck and the post prevented Horsham from scoring again.
