Sidley paceman's top 10

SIDLEY paceman Chris Deeprose is revelling in the unique sensation of claiming all 10 wickets in the second team's Sussex Division Two defeat of Pulborough.

And not only was it a club first, it was also only the third time anyone had bagged the full house in the history of the Sussex League which dates back to the 1960s.

"It was definitely my best moment on a cricket field," said the 20-year-old, whose previous best Sussex League haul comprised four wickets in another seconds game two years ago. "I never thought I'd get 10. It was the best I've bowled and probably the quickest as well. It just all went right.

"When I went out there I was going to bowl a bit of seam and then a bit of spin and just try and do my best. When I got the seventh wicket I thought 'there's a chance of me doing this'. But even though I got 10 wickets it was still a team effort more than anything else."

Captain Guy Montgomery, who maintained the pressure at the other end by racking up seven maidens in 16 overs, added: "It was awesome. Even though his first two overs went for 20 he looked very threatening and I thought he was going to take wickets. Once he got four I just had that feeling he was going to get 10. I think it probably was one of the best performances I've seen at second XI level. I can't praise him highly enough."

And the Pulborough batsmen must have been full of admiration, not to mention trepidation, as well. They simply couldn't cope with Deeprose's fast medium pace and particularly his vicious swinging yorkers. Seven of them had their stumps uprooted, two more went leg before while the other was caught behind by Paul Oxborrow.

And it secured an unlikely home victory after they had been dismissed for 161 in which Deeprose registered the third highest score of 22. Fahd Bhatti led the way with 44, Oxborrow supplied 23 and 14-year-old Jamie Ramsden added a valuable 10 not out at the end.

It's no co-incidence that both of Sidley's second XI wins from contested matches this summer have come when first team regular Deeprose, whose Saturday morning work commitments render him unable to travel, has been in the side. He bludgeoned 126 in the other success against Stirlands in June.
