SIDLEY SUCCUMB TO WILY SPINNER JONES

SIDLEY 2nds were bowled out even quicker than their first team on Saturday but at least they managed to pick up maximum bowling points from their Sussex Division Two match at home to Preston Nomads.

Unlike the front side, it was Preston who took to the crease first and lost their first wicket in the opening over.

But a 63-run stand between Chris Bidwell (45) and N. Stedman (15) steadied the innings before a mini-collapse had them struggling at 106-5.

Phil Standen (54) was able to build an impressive total with support from P. Hird (13) and N. Miller (17) before Pat Grace stormed through the tail to finish with figures of 5-79 off 16 overs. He was ably supported by Simon Calver (3-41).

An early loss set the standard for the Sidley reply. Kevin Deeprose (18) and Grace (17) managed to delay the inevitable but Sidley lost their last eight wickets for a pathetic 20 runs as they had no answer to the wily spin of Ian Jones (5-18) and accuracy of Phil Standen (2-3).
