Southwick draw again

FOR the second successive match, defender Lee Thompson rescued a point for Southwick Football Club from the penalty spot.

He equalised at league-leaders Pagham in a 2-2 draw last Tuesday and levelled at third-placed Peacehaven on Saturday with 12 minutes left for his sixth goal of the season. He is now Wickers' second-top scorer, behind striker Paul Elliott, who has nine goals.

In the first half, Wickers missed three glorious chances to go ahead. Neil Harris delayed his shot too long and was tackled, Jordan Saunders' effort was brilliantly saved and Nick Green hit a one-on-one chance wide.

Early in the second period, Saunders free kick hit the underside of the bar, bounced on the goal line and was cleared before Peacehaven went ahead on 67 minutes. Tony Timms was harsly adjudged to have brought down a Peacehaven striker and Callum Saunders scored from the spot.

After Southwick's equaliser, substitute Adam Steele had a chance to win the match but fired wide with just the keeper to beat.

Youth-team Piers Hamilton made his debut in goal with regular stopper Keith Cheal unavailable.
