Sun shines on running series opener

Bexhill Runners’ 2011 Seafront Run Series got underway in ideal conditions.

The 108 finishers in a 5K race over a fast and flat 2.5km out and back course along the seafront (which the runners completed twice) were greeted by sunny skies and light winds.

Hastings Athletic Club teenage talent Ross Skelton took full advantage to triumph in 16 minutes and 12 seconds, edging out Joshua Varney by four seconds.

Daniel Russell was third in 16.48, just a second quicker than Sussex Marathon winner James Mountford. Sam Alvarez, who came 19th overall, was the leading lady in 19.33.

Before the main event, there were children’s races over 2K, 1K and 500m which yielded a total of 48 finishers. Matt Herring (Hastings AC) won the 2K in 7.13, Matthew Wilson (Bodyworks XTC) clinched the 1K in 3.45 and Hannah Davis ran away with the 500m in 1.49.

This is the 10th year the series has been organised, raising the profile of running and fitness in the town. The second 5K race of the series - a Sussex Grand Prix event which is likely to attract around 300 runners - will take place on July 27.
