Sunny Sunday brings down Goodwood’s 2015 curtain

A massive crowd, one of the biggest for thsi fixture for a long time, poured through the gates to see the track’s final seven contests of what has been a memorable year.

The action began with the racecourse’s annual contest for jump jockeys, the Alderbrook Stakes, won this year by Bold Runner, ridden by Trevor Whelan on his first go on the flat and first-ever visit to Goodwood.

Bold Runner, trained by Jose Santos, came home at 25/1, holding off a strong challenge from Sussex jockey Josh Moore on Mr Fickle, who was second after being tipped on this website.

Paul Hanagan won the Docker Hughes Maiden Auction Stakes - named in honour of the former Pompey fan and dockyard worker who once stood for parliament - on Yosemite (7/2), trained by in-form Richard Fahey.

There was disappointment for locals in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Nursery Stakes when Goodwood Zodiac - owned by the Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group - failed to fire, finishing well down thefield in a race won by leading apprentice jockey Tom Marquand on In the Red at 7/1.

That was a 15th win of the Goodwood season for trainer Richard Hannon, confirming that he retains the Dick Hern Trophy for another year.

The trophy is given to the trainer with the most race wins over the Goodwood year and in having won it twice in the two years he has been a trainer, Hannon is following a tradition first upheld by his father, who had won it five years out of the previous six.

Issemist (6/1) took the Hildon Stakes under Shane Gray for trainer John Gallagher.

The Irish EBF Maiden Stakes was claimed by the Mick Channon-trained 9/2 chance Harrison, ridden by Silvestre de Sousa.

Sussex’s Jim Crowley rode Carnachy to victory at 6/1 in the Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group Stakes and the fibnal race of the season on the Downs, the the Golf At Goodwood Stakes, went to Dick Hern Trophy runner-up Mark Johnston as Joe Fanning rode Ifwecan first past the post after going off at 10/1.
