Sussex face tough Yorkshire task before one-day cup action at Hove

Sussex CCC shift their attention away from the short game to the LV County Championship this weekend with a daunting trip to table-topping Yorkshire.

The Headingley outfit are the country's most successful county side, with 31 championships to their name.

They have, however, not added a title since 2001, but hopes are high that they can clinch the league this season - and supporters will be expecting them to see off Sussex in the match which begins today (Friday).

Yorkshire head into the match in good form, sitting top of the County Championship and already through to the quarter finals of the one-day cup following a ten-wicket win over Derbyshire earlier this week.

They restricted Derbyshire to just 151, with Adil Rashid (3-45) and Rich Pyrah (3-25) the pick of the bowling attack. Openers Adam Lyth (67) and Alex Lees (69) had little trouble in chasing down the total in less than 30 overs. It is fair to say, then, that Yorkshire will face Sussex full of confidence.

Sussex return to Hove on Wednesday for the latest game in their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign, with action against Glamorgan getting underway from 2pm.

Much like the Sharks' T20 campaign, Sussex's Royal London results have been something of a mixed bag so far.

The county has won three and lost four of its seven games in the competition, with the latest result a disappointing and frustrating rain-interrupted loss to Kent under the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) system.

In truth Sussex, who collapsed at the end, losing seven wickets for less than 60 runs, didn't look likely to secure the win at any stage of their batting, despite an encouraging and at times attractive knock from Ed Joyce, who fell three short of his half century.

They have, however, displayed some positive form in the competition, not least pace bowler Yasir Arafat.

The bowler took five wickets for just 36 runs in a recent victory over Somerset, with three coming in just one over, while Joyce has impressed with the bat.

Young talent Will Beer has transferred his T20 form into the Royal London Cup, albeit without perhaps the eye-catching figures he plundered in the 20 over game, and in Luke Wright the county boasts one of the competition's most explosive talents.
