Tennis: Homegrown talent nets success at Chichester tournament

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted a 12-and-under matchplay tennis tournament '“ the last in a series of junior events held at the club over the summer.

It was run using a compass draw format of eight players, meaning each competitor was guaranteed three matches.

Each match was best of three short sets to four games with a match tie-break for the third set.

It was a superb day for the local club players.

Julian Standish beat Sam Ellison 4-2, 4-1 in a high-quality final and William Broom won the third-place match against Oscar McCall 4-2, 4-2.

The back-draw final was won by Dominic Lelean, who beat Marcus Blake 4-0, 4-0.

Tournament organiser Peter Cook said: “It’s been great to see so many juniors from Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club competing regularly and doing so well this summer.

“We welcome and encourage all young budding tennis players to come and enjoy playing in our tournaments.

“The club also actively promote a complete mini and junior tennis coaching programme.

“This includes a range of tournaments for all age groups scheduled for the forthcoming winter season.”
