Thrilling action at Angmering raceway

IT was Hollywood-style car action all the way at Angmering raceway on Bank Holiday Monday May 25th when 10 drivers lined up to attempt clear a line of wrecked cars in the annual car jump.

As car after car fell from the sky onto the mangled wrecks on the ground, it fell to Glen 'Gonzo' Beavis to power his car over the ramp and into the wide blue yonder, sailing a good ten feet over the line of cars, before connecting with terra firma with an almighty crash.

The crowd held its breath as the driver appeared to be stunned by the impact, but burst into applause as he climbed (somewhat shakily) from his wrecked car to receive his trophy.

The car crushing was not over; however, as an ex-Spirit fm van was soon hurtling up the ramp. Bets had been on all day as to just how far the huge van would make it, with most settling on one of two cars. In the event, the van almost made it, crashing to earth on the final car and turning it into a metal pancake.

There was more breathtaking action in the final event of the day, the last-car-moving demolition derby. Incredibly, Karl Annents had salvaged what was the left of the ramp jump winning car and with the original driver not feeling quite up to more metal bashing antics on the day, took to the track for another chance for glory.

After taking some severe batterings on the back straight, Annents was indeed the last car moving and to add to the Hollywood style action of the day the as the car exploded in flames just as the chequered flag was waved. Annents climbed unhurt from the car as the crowd roared their approval to a show stopping end to a truly action-packed day of racing.

Elsewhere on the racing card, there were wins in the finals for four, Tom Pedwell in the Junior Prods, 28 Craig Cooper in the Junior Rods, 306 Jack Morgan in the 1600 Front Wheel Drives, 936 Mike Schutt in the Hot Rods and 36 Ant Donavon in the Rear Wheel Drive Saloon Rods.
