Saxons won 5-3 at home to fellow contenders Penguin to remain six points clear at the Sussex Open Hockey League Division One summit with seven games to go.

Busbridge said: “I think it’s ours to throw away. As long as we keep playing properly and don’t get carried away, we should be okay.

“We’ve still got to go to Hailsham, which will be a tough game, and we will have to do a job at home to Southwick as well. Even this weekend, Lewes (II) away is never an easy game.”

Busbridge was pleased to finally get the better of Penguin at the third time of asking this season and felt that the margin of victory could have more convincing.

“It was a very good result,” he added. “We let in a couple late on, otherwise it would’ve been even more comfortable than the score suggests.

“We probably could’ve scored more goals and conceded less, but I’m very pleased to score five against the second-placed team and maintain that six-point cushion.”

Paddy Cornish (back) is struggling, but Saxons expect to field a virtually unchanged squad against a sixth-placed Lewes side which they beat 3-1 in October’s reverse fixture.
