VIDEO: Storm The Stars puts down big-race marker with Goodwood win

WILLIAM HAGGAS-trained Storm The Stars won the feature race on day two of Goodwood’s May Festival to put himself among the contenders for one of the season’s flat-racing classics.

But although his Goodwood win came in the Cocked Hat Stakes - regarded as the last proper trial for the Derby - it seems the three-year-old is more likely to be seen in the St Leger in September.

With Pat Cosgrave on board, Storm The Stars (3/1) led from the off and found a little more at the death when it seemed James Doyle on Godolphin’s Best Of Times, the 11/4 favourite, might catch him. See the race in our video, above.

The trainer’s wife Maureen Haggas said: ‘He is unlikely to go for the Derby - he is still a real baby, improving a bit every time. He just wants time and could be a Leger horse - he is that sort; he stays well.

“He is improving with every race which is all you can ask but he is still like a big naughty teenager not a professional yet. There is nothing wrong with his resolution but he’s mentally immature, looking around him and sweating up.”

Away from the feature race, there was a double for champion jockey and Goodwood’s top rider Richard Hughes as he rode winners for Richard Hannon and Roger Charlton.

His victories came on 4/11 favourite Nelspruit in the opener, the Spitfire Maiden Auction Stakes, and on 6/1 chance Royal Silk in the Goodwood Aero Club Fillies’ handicap.

Pat Dobbs landed the Reheat Stakes at odds of 6/1 on Pulborough trainer Amanda Perrett’s Czech It Out, owned by Swanmore’s George Materna – a year after being narrowly beaten in the same race and then suffering a fractured pelvis in a race at Newmarket.

Matin Lane had to wait for the result of a lengthy stewards’ inquiry to be confirmed as the winner of the Goodwood Flying School Fillies’ Stakes on Endless Time, the 5/6 favourite, for Charlie Appleby.

THE IBA Stakes – won last year by Intrinsic, who went on to land the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious – went to Ruwaiyan (14/1), steered home by Luke Morris for James Tate, and the last, the Racing UK Day Pass Just £10 Stakes, saw Lane complete a double on John Gallagher’s 8/1 contender Major Pusey.

Saturday’s final day of the festival features the Tapster Stakes and Festival Stakes – both sponsored by 888Sport – and a £75,000 handicap.
