Wanderer Jeremy's long haul

Long-distance cycling, or Audax as it is called, is run by Audax UK and offers several hundred events each year in the United Kingdom over distances ranging from 50km to 1,400km.

Recently a 400km event, organised by Dave Hudson, took place from Heathfield and riders enjoyed the counties of East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent, with the furthest reaching to Warninglid in the west and Dungeness in the east. The distance had to be completed within a set time.

Jeremy Meades took part for Lewes Wanderers Cycling Club, leaving Heathfield at 4am. Riding with Derek Slann from Charlotteville CC, the pair completed the event within 20 hours including stops. Actual ride time was 16.5 hours.

On Sunday Meades was one of six Wanderers entered in the Worthing Excelsior CC 25-mile time trial, and he completed the event in a respectable 1:5.10. The tough, wet and windy conditions led to a slightly depleted field, with not all 79 entrants starting.

Some of the riders escaped the rain but nobody escaped the blustery winds and it was hard going into the headwind from Great Daux to the turn at Southwater.

Fastest Wanderer was Colin Harris with a 59.11 ride. Harris's performance would have been impressive in favourable conditions but was a top drawer on such a challenging day. Other Wanderers times: Mike Levitt 1:04.04 and John Mankelow 1:04.16. The event was won by Steve Dennis in 54.15.

Monday saw round three of the Lewes Wanderers Evening Ten Series, with the conditions windy and challenging and the worst yet this season. Only 16 riders were brave enough to go, and the top three finishers were Colin Harris, who improved on his previous week's time despite the conditions with 23.25, Jeremy Meades (25.00) and king of the vets Ian Landless (25.32).
