Ward, 25, had an impressive first season with the EBL Division 1 club and is delighted to be returning again for the coming season.

He said: “I’m definitely looking forward to the new season. I think our aim should be to finish in the top four but aim to win it.

“I don’t think that’s out of the question and I think we’ll be in good shape for the season.”

Ward started out at Brighton Bears as a junior, before attending High School in California for a year and a half, Gran Canaria Academy for a year, St Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, for a year and Saint Michael’s College in Vermont for three years.

He returned to Sussex last year and has since set up his own coaching programme, South Coast Elite Basketball.

Thunder coach Daniel Hildreth is thrilled that Ward will be on board again and said: “I’m thoroughly delighted that Tom will stay. He’s the utmost professional in practice and in games.

“He leads by example with his attitude and his effort and is a very high calibre player as well. I’m extremely pleased to have him playing for us and he does a lot of coaching around the county for the club as well.

“He’s made a name for himself throughout Sussex basketball with his devlopment of younger players and it’s important that we have that county involvement.”
