West Wittering ground team will be force to be reckoned with

WEST WITTERING Cricket Club are eagerly looking forward to the new season.

The friendly, vibrant and ever-growing club are thriving in adult and junior cricket and have achieved a lot on and off the field.

In 2011 the first XI achieved promotion in the West Sussex Invitation League while Mark Taylor led the club’s successful application to achieve the prestigious ECB Clubmark award for its continued commitment to the welfare and development of young cricketers.

This season looks prosperous for West Wittering. Youth cricket continues to flourish and there will be under-ten, 12 and 14 teams playing league cricket – all coached on a Wednesday by seven qualified ECB coaches.

The club are always looking to expand the colts section, especially at under-14: contact head coach Shaun Standing 07788 185328 for more information.

Generous funding from the FG Woodger Trust will make the Millennium Meadow the place to play and watch cricket in 2012. The nets are having a revamp as is the astroturf strip. A new sightscreen to match the one at the pavilion end and new roll-on covers will help things along. One of the most exciting prospects for 2012 is the introduction of a second XI playing in the Invitation League. Headed by Ian Jones, the team will be a mixture of youth and experience, giving younger players the opportunity of league cricket for the first time.

For those that want to play competitive cricket without the commitment of a league, WWCC offer Sunday friendly cricket and T20 games in midweek.

The club hold numerous fundraising events every year, from a race night to a six-a-side tournament and a fireworks display which last year pulled in nearly 1,000 people through the gates. The funds raised have gone towards an electric scoreboard.

WWCC want to bring the community together again on Saturday – March 17 – with a NatWest Cricket Force day.

They are asking club members, locals and local businesses to pool together to help with improvements to the club to make it a place where even more locals will enjoy visiting.
