Cooking up some top safety tips in Wick

FIREFIGHTERS will be creating a bit of a stir in Wick, next Thursday (September 20).

Crews from Littlehampton will be visiting the area as part of the service’s kitchen fire safety week.

Littlehampton firefighter Philip Grace will be swapping his fire kit for an apron during a set of live cooking demonstrations to raise awareness of kitchen safety among families in the area.

The teams will be cooking up some simple, nutritious and cost-effective recipes while passing on tips about staying fire-safe in the kitchen.

Philip Grace, who organised the event, said: “In Littlehampton, over half of the fires in the home are started in the kitchen, a statistic that is a real concern for us. We know that just the smallest lapse of concentration can have devastating consequences and what is frustrating is that so many of these fires could easily have been avoided.

“That’s why we are always trying to find new and memorable ways to promote safer cooking habits. Throughout the demonstrations we will be stressing the importance of things like not leaving pans unattended, not overloading sockets, how to cook safely with oil, as well as encouraging people to test their smoke alarms regularly and make an escape plan in case a fire breaks out.”

The event will take place at the Children and Family Centre, Wickbourne Centre, in Clun Road, between 1-5pm.

An information bus will also be outside the centre giving advice to people.
