Horsham’s Capitol is offering a message of hope amid the lockdown: “The Show Must Go On.”

As Matthew Effemey, operations manager at The Capitol, explains: “Digital screens in the front window of The Capitol are currently displaying eye-catching images of forthcoming shows but there is one very special image showing whilst the venue is temporarily closed during the second lockdown and that’s one which simply says ‘The Show Must Go On.’

“This logo was designed and used by theatre professionals in London’s West End standing together for the British theatre community and is endorsed by many West End producers.

“We are delighted to have the rights to use the SMGO logo with its clear message representing solidarity throughout the industry at this challenging time.

“With some fantastic shows programmed for when we re-open in December, each with socially-distanced seating, we can’t wait to welcome our customers back.”

The December line-up includes Paul Sinha, comedian, broadcaster and celebrated Quizzer on Friday, December 4, West End performer Oliver Tompsett with A Night at The Musicals on Saturday, December 5, Olivier award winner Cassidy Janson with an exclusive show for The Capitol ahead of her 2021 tour on Thursday, December 17, A Christmas Carol from December 12-29 and Santa’s New Sleigh from December 12-24.

In the meantime, the venue is keeping up a proud theatrical tradition.

Matthew said: “There’s a tradition in the theatre world of leaving a ghost light on when a venue is closed for the evening.

“It’s usually a small single bulbed light that shines on the dark stage throughout the night when the theatre is closed and unoccupied.

“It seems more poignant than ever that The Capitol’s ghost light should be shining during these dark evenings of lockdown.

“But rather than using a small lamp, we have a beautiful Victorian-style street lamp in the front foyer.

“It’s on loan from the set of this year’s festive play A Christmas Carol to remind everyone that the heart of the venue is very much beating.”
