Mewsbrook is the magnet for Littlehampton’s jubilee jollity

MEWSBROOK Park will be the hub of Littlehampton’s Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations with a bumper programme of events lined up for Monday and Tuesday’s bank holidays (June 4 and 5).

A giant television screen will show the diamond jubilee concert live from Buckingham Palace on Monday evening, while the park itself will host a wide range of entertainment and activities for all tastes.

The two-day extravaganza has been organised by Chace Catering, which runs the park’s kiosk/café, and Littlehampton-based Upfront Events, in aid of Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, at Poling.

And the occasion will be all the more memorable for the winners of a children’s fancy dress competition, who will be given the honour of helping Littlehampton’s new mayor, Emma Neno, to light the town’s seafront beacon on Monday night.

Other highlights on Monday include a display by traditional Portuguese dancers at 1pm and a performance by the Littlehampton Concert Band at 6pm.

Monday will also feature a tug-of-war competition at 1.30pm between teams of six (entry is £12 per team), with a trophy for the winner and medals for all taking part.

Registration for the fancy dress competition is at 2.30pm, with judging at 3.30pm. The entry fee is £1, with age groups for three to five, six to nine and 10 to 12.

The televised concert will be screened at 7pm, with a parade from the park to the beacon setting off at 9.30 for the lighting at 10.15.

Both days will have fun activities including a chance to win a car, pizza making, birds of prey displays, children’s train rides, guess the number of balloons in a limousine, several raffles and tombolas and stalls run by various local charities to raise awareness and funds.

A bar will be open both days from 11am-9pm.

On Tuesday, the giant screen will be back in action for the Ceremony of Thanksgiving with the carriage procession through the streets of London.

David Chace, of Chace Catering, thanked the event’s sponsors for all their support.
