South Korean pianist Su Yeon Kim plays Chopin for online concert

An Evening in With... Su Yeon Kim is the next short online concert from Hastings International Piano this Friday, April 3.

The 2018 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition Prizewinner will perform Chopin Nocturne in F sharp minor, Op. 48 No. 2, and Chopin Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52.

The event starts at 7pm on Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition’s Facebook page and on www.hastingsinternationalpiano.org.

Hastings International Piano decided to create this online series after arts venues across the UK suspended shows due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

A spokesperson said: “South Korean pianist Su Yeon Kim has been described by the press as ‘one of the most empathetic and sincere musician among young generation’, ‘... has a remarkably sophisticated technique with incredibly detailed articulation and miniature values, and she deserves words of admiration.’

“Her achievements include the second prize at the Mozart International Competition Salzburg 2020 and many more: the first and the special prize ‘Fundacion Internacional Gomez-Martinez’ at the Compositores de Espana Piano Competition, 1st prize at the J. N. Hummel International Piano Competition, 2nd prize at the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition and 3rd prize at the Alaska International e-Piano Competition. She also won Gold prize at the Asia Chopin International Piano Competition and the 2nd prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for the Young Musicians.

“She also gained international recognition when she was a semi-finalist of both the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

“She was invited a number of times to music festivals to perform such as Allegretto Zilina Festival, St. Gellert Festival Szeged, Allegro Vivo Festival, and apart from them, she has performed in important venues including in Munich Herkullessaal, Budapest Grand Hall of Liszt Music Academy, Bartok-Memorial House, Milan Auditorium Gaber, Slovak Philharmony, Salzburg Grosser Saal, Vienna Mozarthaus and in Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. As a soloist she appeared with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Wallonie, Mozarteum Sinfonieorchester, Poland Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Gellert Academy Orchestra, Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Fairbanks Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Born in 1994, she started playing piano at age five and studied at The Korean Institute for the Gifted in Arts and at the Korea National University of Arts, under Prof. Choong-Mo Kang, Chongpil Lim and Eunju Heo. She also has been guidanced by Austrian pianist Paul Gulda.

“Since 2013, she has continued her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, holding her bachelor’s degree with distinction.”
