Summer’s bounty on show in Rustington

BLISTERING summer sun and brilliant blooms helped to make Rustington Horticultural Association’s summer flower show one to remember, on Saturday (August 18).

Exhibitors at the show, held at the Woodland Centre, in Woodlands Avenue, certainly had their work cut out this year, with the recent unsettled weather and record levels of rainfall just a few weeks ago.

Mick Minton was the day’s most successful exhibitor, securing almost a dozen top awards. He received the Banksian Medal for the most prize money, National Dahlia Society silver and bronze medal for the top two dahlia exhibits, Manor Nurseries Top Vase, Ashridge Challenge Cup, HF Ellis Cup for winning the master gardener class and Onion Challenge Cup for the best onion display.

He also picked up certificates for the most meritorious vegetable, winning the Top Tray class, an award for best 10-rod allotment and the Patrick Southerton Cup for the best vase in flower classes 7, 8 and 9, and took the Colley Challenge Cup for the best allotment, which he won jointly with his wife, Wendy.

Christine Fry received certificates for the most meritorious exhibit in flower classes, gladiolus spike, best and second best gladiolus exhibits, Bruce Cup for the highest points in the gladiolus classes and the Leggett Challenge Bowl for the top fruit, flower and vegetable exhibit.
