First Brighton gig in 12 years for Finnish progressive rock band
Brighton date
Finnish progressive rock band Von Hertzen Brothers will return to Brighton this November for their first show in the city in 12 years, bringing their Acoustic Enough live experience to Komedia on Tuesday, November 3.
The return forms part of a special four-date UK theatre tour celebrating the band’s 25th anniversary, but rather than simply bringing their usual electric rock show back to Brighton, Von Hertzen Brothers are returning with something completely different.
The band describe the performances as acoustic ‘enough.’ While songs from across their career have been reimagined away from their usual electric rock set-up, this is anything but a traditional unplugged show, they say. Instead, brothers Mikko, Kie and Jonne von Hertzen, together with bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Markus Pajakkala, surround themselves with an extraordinary collection of instruments. Throughout the evening the musicians switch between drums, keyboards, guitars, percussion, vocals and considerably more besides, creating expansive new arrangements of songs drawn from across the band’s nine studio albums.
Singer/guitarist Mikko Von Hertzen said: “Our songs have always existed in many shapes and forms and ever since we found an organic and intimate way to perform them acoustically enough, people have really enjoyed these fresh versions. It’s a chance for us to get closer to the audience and to have a really special evening. Being the rocker guys we are, the enough in the title came after we realised that from a production perspective, we have a load more stuff on stage than on a regular rock show! We can’t wait to come over and show this side of us to you as well.”
Presented in the intimate, seated setting of Komedia Basement, the concert is designed to bring audiences closer to the music and the musicians themselves. Fan favourites will sit alongside deep cuts and rarely performed material, all given new arrangements created specifically for these anniversary shows.
Formed in Finland in 2001, Von Hertzen Brothers have spent the past quarter of a century building a reputation as one of their country’s most distinctive rock exports. Their career has produced multiple chart-topping albums at home, an EMMA Award (Finland’s equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Rock Album, and a devoted international audience built through extensive touring and festival appearances.
Their music has never fitted neatly into a single genre, drawing on progressive and classic rock, folk, psychedelia and pop, with the harmonies of the three brothers providing a distinctive thread throughout their catalogue.
Twelve years after their last Brighton appearance, Acoustic Enough offers both long-standing fans and those discovering Von Hertzen Brothers for the first time a rare opportunity to experience the band at close quarters and in a form Brighton audiences have never seen before.
