BATTLE CHORAL SOCIETY
Last Saturday’s performance of Handel’s Messiah by Battle Choral Society at St Mary’s Church was a joy to hear this magnificent work performed so expertly by a local choir, conducted by their musical director Vincent Wade and joined by three talented soloists, accompanied by three musicians on organ, trumpet and percussion. It was very moving to hear all the particularly well-known pieces beautifully sung such as the triumphant ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, soprano Grace Constable’s ‘I know that my Redeemer liveth’ and the ‘Trumpet shall sound’ sung by bass Peter Grevatt and accompanied by trumpeter Andy Gill, soaring in triumph to the rafters. The whole evening was a memorable experience. The audience could have been larger and that might encourage more male singers to join the choir which needs more bass and tenor choristers (no auditions necessary, just a love of singing.) The performance was free as were the programmes and refreshments, all that is asked for are donations for charity and there was also a reasonably priced raffle with beautiful hampers as prizes. The Autumn Concert will be on 10th October when the choir will perform J S Bach Magnificat in D major BWV 243.
JAN WRITES
Back in the days of our childhood there was hardly any traffic on the roads to interfere with our fun and games on the aptly named ‘Crazy Lane’. This has a very steep hill which was ideal for careering down on our homemade go-carts with many a spill and grazed knees, which in those days we all took for granted as part of being a child with freedom to play. Skipping was another favourite past time as we girls took turns in jumping in and out of a long rope, usually with two long-suffering boys in charge of turning it at either end. There were many mantras to be heard such as ‘In comes the Bogeyman and out goes you.’ Hopscotch was another great favourite played in the road – oh, we knew how to live it up and have great fun and not a smart phone in sight!
SPORT
From Ann - Our cricketers lost to Brightling Park away on Sunday. We reached 130 at the end of our innings with top scorer Harry Strugnell at 56. Brightling reached 221 for 6. We were down to 10 men, but battled hard on their small pitch. All to play for next Sunday at home against Crowhurst and it's my turn to do the teas, that should slow down the scoring.
