As the world at war threatens to eclipse the world of peace the Bexhill and Hastings United Nations Association are asking: What’s up with the United Nations? Join us on Saturday, 24th October 2026, St. Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Bexhill-on-Sea, TN40 2HE. 1.30pm for a 1.45pm – 4.45pm programme.

The news media offered an answer when it widely reported on the obnoxious warmongering behaviour of certain UN Member States, at the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, 22-28 September. But this is only a superficial answer. We need a more profound answer.
Therefore, in celebration of UN Day, we have invited Professor Richard Sakwa to fully address the question. He will explain how the UN Charter is being so misused and abused that it amounts to the corruption of the United Nations, which makes it appear weak, irrelevant and ineffectual in the now, dire state of the world. This will take place at a public seminar:

At our last public seminar, the Rev Stephen Need (the Rector of St. Peter’s Church, Bexhill) gave an inspiring talk about how we might prepare and empower people as peace-makers. Thus enabling them to take the first steps in ‘Paving the Way to Sustainable Peace’.
At this seminar, on 24th October, Richard Sakwa (who is an emeritus professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent) will lead on preparing us to take the next steps, by first describing the UN Charter System.
In respect of learning peace-making, the Rev. Stephen Need described how many layers of complexity exist in war-ridden situations, such as Israel/Palestine. And the keys to peaceful resolutions are compassion and empathic understanding of both friends and enemies.
Professor Richard Sakwa will show how people, as empowered peace-makers, can influence their governments to properly use and invoke the UN Charter a means of working through those ‘layers of complexity’ with understanding and compassion. This will inform and ensure their negotiations for the resolution of wars are capable of securing Sustainable Peace.
