THIS contented young maiden is pictured hard at work picking hops.

Elisabeth Howard.

A true heroine of the town

ELISABETH Howard, who died in 2006, was a familiar face in the county town. A great friend of the Rouser, she could be cantankerous and dour, but she loved Lewes and its environs and the town owes her a debt it can never repay.

A Light For Those In Peril

LANTERNS tied to Sussex grazing livestock could be seen well out to sea and easily mistaken for the lights of another vessel. Danger indeed. Jonathon Darby was Parson of East Dean in the late 17th century and his duties included the burial of bodies washed up from ship wrecks.

Letter: Our objections misconstrued

I AM disturbed to read the inaccurate reporting of the proposed JPK development in the Old Town, Eastbourne, of the Edgmond Church contained in the Hailsham and Eastbourne edition of the Sussex Express under the Parish Pump item referring to ‘Willingdon,Wannock and Jevington’ and the apparent vilification of those of us not living in ‘Willingdon, Wannock and Jevington’, who have dared to show our concerns over the effect that the proposed development will have on our property in Old Town.

Letter: What future for this Lewes ‘hospital’?

What future for the Victoria ‘Hospital’ in Lewes, where the wards are closed, now that it is essentially an office-hours treatment centre for operations for anyone choosing Lewes for their treatment, and a day-time minor injuries unit?

Letter: Seaford - public input welcomed

Seaford Town Council welcomes the interest, views and concerns of the residents of Seaford and does all it can to help solve any concerns and problems.
