Level crossing reopens after months of disruption

Plumpton Level Crossing has finally reopened after months of disruption as Network Rail removed the historic Victorian gates.

The main road through the village was closed in October 2015 as Network Rail deemed the Grade-II listed crossing unsafe.

The closure caused chaos for local residents and ‘split the village in two’, with some people having to travel for an extra half hour just to get home.

After Network Rail was given listed building consent to permanently remove the Victorian crossing last month, despite a 600-strong petition objecting to the proposal, work began on replacing the iconic gates with a modern, automated crossing.

This week, the work was completed and the road finally reopened to traffic.
