Severe railway delays in Sussex: 'Major disruption' expected until 8pm after multiple incidents including fatality

A ‘number of incidents’ are currently impacting Great Northern, Thameslink and Southern services this morning.
Services across the network may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to an hour or revised, Southern Rail said.

Hide AdA spokesperson added: “Major disruption is expected until 8pm.
“Staff would strongly recommend that you delay travelling until later today.”
These are the incidents that were ongoing, as of 9.30am:
- A person has been hit by a train between Bedford and London St Pancras International;
- A fault with the level crossing barriers at Royston;
- A points failure at Finsbury Park.

The following alterations to services are in place:
- Trains that usually run between Peterborough and Horsham will run between Peterborough and London Kings Cross;

Hide Ad- Trains that usually run between Sevenoaks and Welwyn Garden City will run between Sevenoaks and London Blackfriars;
- A heavily reduced service will operate between Bedford and Gatwick Airport / Brighton;
- A heavily reduced service will operate between St Albans City and Sutton / Wimbledon;
- Southern services that run between Ore and London Victoria will be calling additionally at Three Bridges;

Hide Ad- Southern services that run between Littlehampton and London Victoria will be calling additionally at Balcombe and Three Bridges.
The following services will be suspended:
- Direct between Brighton and Cambridge;
- Direct between Three Bridges and Bedford;
- Direct between Luton and Orpington;
- Direct between Bedford and East Grinstead and Littlehampton;
Train tickets will be accepted, at no additional cost, on; London Underground lines ‘via all necessary routes’; Metrobus between Horsham and Three Bridges; Brighton & Hove Buses between Brighton and Hove; Southern between London and Horsham; Gatwick Express between Brighton, Gatwick Airport and London Victoria and mutually across Thameslink and Great Northern services ‘via any reasonable route’.
