LETTER: Safer to utilise wheelie bins?

I refer to your report that two binmen were injured by sharp objects in bin bags (October 14).

Lewes DC has an old fashioned system of collecting bin bags but many of us have privately purchased wheelie bins.

Although the lorries are equipped to lift and empty such bins, more often than not the men lift the bags out of my wheelie bin and place it in another bin to be lifted into the dust cart, thus potentially exposing themselves to any sharp object projecting from the bag.

I suspect this is done to save time but would it not be safer for them to use wheelie bins when provided by local residents?
