Eight en-suite rooms ‘opening soon’ above historic Lewes brewery’s shop

Harvey’s Brewery says eight individually designed en-suite rooms are set to open above its Brewery Shop in Lewes.

The company announced at www.harveys.org.uk/bridge-wharf-inn that the Bridge Wharf Inn is ‘opening soon’ in Cliffe High Street, offering places to stay ‘within the historic home of Harvey’s Brewery’.

Harvey’s said the rooms were previously part of the Grade II listed brewery’s offices and aim to combine its original character with a ‘thoughtful, contemporary design’.

Chairman and managing director Hamish Elder said in spring 2026: “Having brewed on this site for eight generations, we’re very conscious of the history around us. This project allows us to preserve that connection while opening up a new chapter for the brewery. It’s an exciting step in broadening what we offer, and in welcoming more people to experience Lewes and Harvey’s.”

Harvey’s said it was working with JSA Architects, Cheesmur Building Contractors and interior designers Pfeiffer Design.

This announcement followed the approval in April 2025 of Walsingham Planning’s application to South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA). The planning application for the shop at 4-6 Cliffe High Street sought the ‘change of use of the small part of the ground floor and upper floors from ancillary office and staff accommodation to Visitor Accommodation/Use Class C1’. People can view planning documents using reference SDNP/25/00929/FUL at planningpublicaccess.southdowns.gov.uk/online-applications.

The original application was for eight double bedrooms with en-suites on the first floor and two self-contained visitor accommodation units within the attic space of the main building.

But in June this year a non-material amendment was approved, in which Harvey and Son (Lewes) Ltd requested changing two of the new rooms to staff accommodation (reference SDNP/26/02076/NMA).

The latest notice on Harvey’s website said: “Each room will have its own identity, taking inspiration from Harvey’s, our pub heritage and the people and places connected to them. Working with local designers, artists and craftspeople, we’re creating rooms that feel individual, comfortable and firmly rooted in Sussex.

“Step outside and you’re right in the heart of Lewes, surrounded by independent shops, pubs and restaurants, with the South Downs just beyond. Stay with us and you’ll also have the rather unusual experience of spending the night at the heart of Sussex’s oldest independent brewery.”

People can now register their interest on the website to be among the first guests to stay at the Bridge Wharf Inn. Harvey’s said they can join a mailing list to find out when rooms will be available to book.
