The owners of Primrose Farm, a large mixed dairy and arable farm which supplies milk locally, want to convert and extend an existing redundant barn into a wedding venue complete with a yurt and catering cabin.

An application for planning permission has been submitted to Wealden District Council.

In a design and access statement, the Primrose family said the venue would be owned and run by the next generation of the family.

They said, “The farm has been in the ownership of our family for three generations, and continues to supply milk locally as well as other crops.

“The site for this application is an existing redundant barn, located within the centre of the farm. It is accessed from the main farmyard road entrance, and then via existing well surfaced farm tracks.

“The barn is set within a large field, with the land sloping towards the South West, down to a series of fishing lakes.

“It is a diversification project to allow for us to maintain the business of the farm, but make better use of the building and to add some additional financial benefit to the wider farm business.

The existing main barn would be renovated to appear as it does now. The dilapidated hovel is then proposed to be re-built in a slightly contemporary style – – using pre-rusted Corten steel – to show the evolution of the buildings construction.

“A separate small ‘catering cabin’ is then proposed to the northern side of the barn, together with a timber framed yurt, which will act as the main space for dining for the wedding guests.”

A decision will be made by planners in the coming weeks.
