Skechers confirmed as opening branch in Worthing high street

An international footwear brand has been confirmed as opening a branch in Worthing.

Skechers will open in the space formerly occupied by Argos, in Montague Street. A post on the Worthing Town Centre Business Improvement District Facebook page said today: “We are delighted to welcome SKECHERS to Montague Street.

“Located in the former Argos building and due to open soon!”

Big posters advertising the brand have also gone up in the window of its soon-to-be new store.

It comes after rumours were rife online about the brand opening in our town, and adverts were spotted for a store manager on recruitment websites.

In July, town planning consultants Lewis & Co applied to Worthing Borough Council on behalf of their (un-named) clients to install a new shop front on the property. The letter referenced installing two sets of double doors, so the space could be split into two shops in the future, as ‘finding a tenant that wanted all the retail space was difficult’. This was agreed.

In October, plans were also submitted to the council which could see another storey constructed on top of the property to house four flats – three two-bed and one one-bed.

The additional storey at 97-99 Montague Street would extend over most of the roof, with screening to be installed at the beach-facing side and access from ‘enhanced rear doors’, according to the plans.

A decision on that plan is pending and can be viewed at https://planning.adur-worthing.gov.uk/online-applications/ by searching AWDM/1279/25.

The space has been empty since Argos closed several years ago.
