Worthing seafront venue Level 1 closes for good after Bonfire Night farewell

An open-air food and drink venue on Worthing seafront has closed for good.

Level 1 welcomed customers for the final time on Thursday, November 5, after a night on the terrace overlooking the Worthing Lions’ Bonfire Night fireworks.

In a Facebook post late that evening, the venue shared a photo of customers on the terrace as fireworks lit up the sky.

“Farewell to all,” the post read. “Out with a bang!”

Level 1 had occupied the terrace in front of the Grafton multi-storey car park on Marine Parade since 2021.

Owner Mel Nicholson, who took over Level 1 this season after three years as its manager, announced in October that it was ‘no longer viable as a hospitality venue’.

Mel said that the car park’s closure had made trading difficult over the previous 18 months. She said some people still assumed Level 1 had closed when the car park shut.

The open-air setting also made events difficult to plan. Mel said changes in the weather had forced some last-minute cancellations, while on the hottest days some customers found it too warm to sit outside.

She said the terrace needed investment, but the uncertainty over how long the venue could stay made it difficult to justify the cost.

Mel said she would miss the staff and loyal customers. “It’s been a big chunk of my life for the last three years – but now maybe a holiday?!”
