Cabinet member for economic growth Stephen Hillier said the council had been working ‘flat out’ to ensure businesses could find the financial support they need quickly, and had automatically applied the government’s business rates holiday to the accounts of businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors who will now not have to pay business rates for 2020/21.

He said: “The council received the final guidance and initial tranche of funding for the business rate grants scheme from the government last week and we have reacted quickly following this.

“We have implemented changes in our IT systems to mitigate the fact that the business rates system is set up to collect, rather than pay, money.

“Within days of receiving the final guidance from Government, we launched a dedicated website to allow local businesses to apply online.”

He added: “I urge all businesses in Mid Sussex who either receive small business rate relief or who are in the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors to find out if you are eligible for government grants of £10,000 or £25,000.”
