Emma sets up new dyslexia support group

A new drop-in support group is being set up for parents with children who have been diagnosed with dyslexia.

The group meets for the first time on Saturday, October 5 in Haywards Heath and the person behind it is dynamic mum Emma Seymour, whose son Elliott has dyslexia.

Elliott was seven at the time of diagnosis two years ago and Emma was unsure of who to turn to.

“You want the best for your child but you feel very isolated,” she said.

“You can feel overwhelmed because you don’t know who to turn to for advice and you need reliable information, resources and support.”

Emma realised there were other mums and dads who were probably feeling just the same, so she wrote a booklet, ‘Understanding Dyslexia’ which was commissioned by the Dyslexia-SpLDTrust as a positive and practical resource that could be used by parents.

Emma also organised two workshops for parents, with advice from a specialist team from Dyslexia Action.

In the meantime, she has been looking for a suitable venue for a drop-in support group to meet regularly in Haywards Heath and she has just found one.

Emma explained: “The free support group is for parents and carers of children with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.”

The group will meet at Number 9, Sussex Road, Haywards Heath.

The venue has been provided by The Haywards Heath Baptist Church and the first session on October 5 will run from 10am to 11.30am.

Emma is also organising another workshop on Saturday, November 16 when an experienced dyslexia specialist will talk about ‘developing confidence, self-esteem and well being in the dyslexic learner’.

Emma is a volunteer with the Parent Champions project, which is a national project supported by all the major dyslexia organisations.
