MMR- it’s never too late to have the vaccine

Parents across Horsham and Mid Sussex are being reminded that it’s never too late to have children immunised against measles, mumps and rubella.

Family doctors, community health teams and hospital staff are being encouraged to discuss MMR vaccination with parents in a bid to reduce the risks of a Swansea-style outbreak affecting our area.

Although MMR vaccination rates have slowly improved since the now discredited stories of a link with autism, the scare has resulted in a large number of children who were not vaccinated at the time or subsequently.

“It’s never too late for a child to have the MMR vaccine and we are urging parents to make sure their children are fully protected,” said Dr Minesh Patel, clinical lead for Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group.

“Most new babies now have the MMR vaccine as part of their standard childhood immunisation but we believe there could be many children who have never had it.

“The more children who are protected, the lower risk there is of a measles outbreak and the potential for children to be seriously ill or even die.”

Parents who want to arrange MMR vaccination, or just check whether or not a child has been immunised, should contact their GP surgery.
