Teachers launch new East Sussex hub to help young people with dyslexia
Two teachers have set up a specialist learning hub for children and young people with dyslexia.
Emily Dewar and Natalie Carpenter launched The Learning Loft in Battle High Street.
The pair run Dyslexia East Sussex, which they say offers specialist support across the county.
Emily said: “Between us, we've been teaching for decades, both moving into specialist education and dyslexia assessment, and we've now taken the rather big step of leaving school and creating something of our own.

“The Learning Loft is our new specialist learning space in Battle. Although our work began with our experience of supporting children and young people with dyslexia and additional needs, we quickly realised that there was a much bigger need for specialist support across all ages.”
Emily said setting up the hub has been a 'huge learning curve'.
She added: “Neither of us came from a business background, so suddenly having to learn about premises, websites, marketing, social media, fundraising and running a business has been quite a leap from the classroom.
“We wanted The Learning Loft to feel very different from a traditional classroom. We deliberately want it to feel more like a home than a school.
"We work around the dinner table, we move around, we use practical and multisensory activities, and we try not to have anyone sitting still for more than about 15 minutes. It's relaxed, open and friendly, but the teaching behind it is highly specialist and structured.”
