Join a twilight walk in Brighton for Cancer Research UK

Katie Ledger, 23, of Franklands Village and friend Hayley Elphick from Hassocks posed for this picture to convey the fun but feisty spirit of Cancer Research UK’s new event.

‘Race for Life Twilight’ is a 5k women-only evening fundraising event which will take place at Brighton’s Preston Park for the first time on Saturday, October 26 at 7pm.

Katie, who works in the oncology and chemotherapy unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, said: “I want to invite women to join together as a formidable army and stomp all over cancer at the new Race for Life Twilight.”

Katie, who lives with boyfriend Edward, was just 12 when she watched her Nan, Carole Ledger, from Portslade, lose her battle to lung cancer. Her death, in 2002, inspired Katie to become a cancer nurse after leaving Oakmeeds Community College, in Burgess Hill.

“Nan was a lovely, caring woman who was only in her early 60s when she died. I remember being so upset when Dad told me she’d got cancer,” said Katie.

“Her death definitely shaped the decisions I have made in my life. Now as a cancer nurse, working on the inpatient ward and in outpatient chemotherapy I see the hurt and suffering cancer causes my patients and their families and it makes me want to fight cancer with all I have.”

Katie, who has been running Race for Life events in and around Brighton every year since she was 14, was one of the first people to sign up for the new October Twilight event, along with best friend Hayley.
