1066 anniversary plans underway

PLANS to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the history-changing Battle of Hastings are already underway.

A small steering committee, Concorde 950, under the patronage of the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, is working to make Friday October 14 2016 an historic day in the life of Battle and the United Kingdom.

There will be a series of connected events starting with a luncheon for specially invited guests, many of whom will be invited from Normandy, and further afield.

This will be followed by a Memorial Service at St Mary The Virgin Church to remember the fallen on that day in 1066, both Saxon and Norman.

A military band will conclude the afternoon events with a marching display in Battle town centre, culminating in the symbolic ceremony of Lowering the Flag at dusk in front of Battle Abbey.

A Vin d’Honneur evening reception will be held for guests from Battle and Normandy as well dignitaries from Hastings and surrounding areas.

The organising committee is hoping to secure a very special guest to mark the occasion.

Her Majesty The Queen graciously attended the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1966 and organisers intend to invite a senior member of the Royal Family join them for this 950th commemoration.
