"Upon arrival crews found three large fires and firefighters extinguished them using hose reels, drag rakes and a thermal imaging camera.

"The fires are believed to be of deliberate ignition, caused by fly tipped waste which was set alight. Sussex Police have been informed."

Crawley Borough Council leader Michael Jones tweeted: “I'm hearing reports of a serious fire at Buchan Park woods and I'm sending @WestSussexFire my thoughts as they extinguish it.

“While not prejudging the cause, it's a reminder how dry things are and the smallest thing can set things ablaze. Please, be careful when out and about.”
