Community Stars: Can Rustington doctor be Health Hero again?

Charles Shlosberg is senior partner at The Lawns Surgery in Glenville Road, Rustington.

He has worked at the surgery since 2003, having worked as a GP in Arun since 1995.

Marcia Mitchell said: “His dedication to patients is unbelievable, I think he deserves a life-long award as he is one in a million.”

Angela Jackson added: “I have voted for him every year and his caring and dedication for patients never changes.

“He is always there for you, long after the care of duty. He is the best.”

Dr Shlosberg said: “I am not at all a greedy person and I am sure that there are other people that are very deserving of this award, though it is nice to know that someone has nominated me. I always like to try to give patients the level of service that I would like to receive myself.

“I always wanted to be a GP and what I like most about the job is the fact that no two days are ever the same and you get to meet so many lovely people. You get to know them very well and you get to help them and their families.”

Also nominated in the Health Heroes category is Selden Medical Centre in Selden Road.

Patient Mike Saunders said: “They have looked after me and my family over the years in the most professional way.”

Practice manager Louise James said: “It is really nice to have a positive comment and it is fantastic that somebody has gone to the effort of thanking us in this way. We all work really hard here and aim to look after our patients to the best of our ability. That someone has noticed that and nominated us for this award is lovely.”

Wendy Sykes nominated the Orchard Surgery in Lancing, who, she says, do a “marvellous job.”

She added: “They have to put up with a lot and they never complain. They offer a great service and are very friendly.”

Joan Streeter nominated the Kingfisher Surgery in Lancing. She said: “No matter how old or how young you are, you cannot get better service anywhere.

“The doctors, nurses and office staff are all angels. I am always having accidents at home and everyone at Kingfisher is kind and understanding.”

The final nomination to date in the health heroes category is the recently retired sister Jane Melhuish.

Since becoming a nurse for the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps a week after her 18th birthday in 1969, she has worked in a burns unit, for children’s special care and latterly, looking after the elderly at Worthing Hospital.

Her parents described her as a “born nurse”, adding: “Jane always went that extra mile to help anyone who needed her and we think she deserves some recognition for all the years of hard but very rewarding work.”

It is not too late to nominate an individual or organisation for any of this year’s awards.
